Dubai, Academic City. December 2025.

One evening, our family was sitting together in the same room, each of us busy with our own activities. I was preparing for my Computer Systems exam at the University of Birmingham Dubai, solving binary calculations filled with numbers such as “1010101000011111…”. Meanwhile, my daughters, Aruuke and Aibiyke, were making their own paper tablets and decorating them with great enthusiasm.

As night fell, it was time for the girls to go to bed. Like many children, they loved listening to bedtime stories before falling asleep. That evening, instead of reading a fairy tale, I decided to explain, in the simplest possible way, how computers actually work.

Just as I was about to begin, my eldest daughter, Aruuke, walked up to me holding her paper tablet and said:

“Mom, you've been solving those strange numbers all day… Can you teach me too?”

She looked at me with genuine curiosity. I smiled and wrote her name using the language of computers—1s and 0s. Then I began showing her how computers represent letters and numbers using binary code. She carefully watched every symbol, eager to discover the secret hidden behind each one.

That small yet unforgettable family moment became the inspiration for this book.

Why Did I Write This Book?

Today, children are introduced to technology at a very early age. Even before they fully learn to speak, they can already swipe a screen, open videos, zoom in on pictures, and start games with remarkable confidence.

However, as someone who has studied information technology, I believe that simply being able to use a smartphone or tablet does not mean that a child is digitally literate.

A child may know how to watch videos on a phone, but they may not:

• know which information can be trusted;
• understand how to protect their personal information;
• recognize when an online stranger may be dangerous;
• question whether an answer generated by artificial intelligence is correct or not.

The more I think about it, the more I realize how many digital skills our children need to learn. As the mother of two daughters, I experience this reality every single day.

I wrote this book both as a mother and as someone who has devoted years to studying information technology.

Like many parents, I often find myself thinking about questions such as:

• When should I give my daughters their first smartphone?
• How much screen time is appropriate for them each day?
• Which games are educational, and which ones are harmful?
• How can I teach my daughters to distinguish reliable information from misinformation on the Internet?
• How should children use artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT responsibly?
• How can we transform technology from something that steals children's time into a tool that helps build their future?

These questions are discussed by parents, teachers, researchers, and technology experts around the world. Yet finding one perfect answer that fits every child is far from easy.

Technology itself is neither good nor bad—it depends entirely on how we use it. Through computers and the Internet, we can learn new languages, read books, prepare documents, create artwork, write software, transfer money to our loved ones, and communicate instantly with people living on the other side of the world. Used wisely, technology opens doors to knowledge, creativity, and endless opportunities.

At the same time, I cannot help but wonder what kind of future awaits our children if these same devices are used only for endless scrolling, random videos, and games that provide little educational value. As both a mother and an IT professional, this question concerns me deeply.

Who Is This Book For?

This book was written primarily for children who are taking their very first steps into the digital world.

It is also intended for:

• parents who want to teach their children how to use technology wisely and responsibly;
• teachers preparing lessons on digital literacy;
• students who wish to develop both their Kyrgyz and English language skills together;
• and anyone beginning their journey of learning about computers and modern technology.

Younger children may understand some chapters best when reading together with a parent or teacher. Older children, however, should be able to complete many of the activities and challenges independently.

This book is not about memorizing facts. Instead, it encourages curiosity, asking questions, exploring new ideas, making mistakes, trying again, and continuing to learn. Those are the most valuable skills anyone can develop in today's digital world.
